You know when your kids ask you to do something for them and you put it off and put it off....BUT THEY JUST KEEP ASKING??? Then you try to deter them, but THEY JUST KEEP ASKING??? Well Emersyn has been asking and asking for months (over a year) if I would take some of her old clothes and make them into NEW clothes. You see, my daughter (the elephant) NEVER forgets anything. AND although I have forgotten a time when I used to sew on a daily basis and make her new clothes weekly, SHE HAS NOT FORGOTTEN. Well things have changed a bit since those days...like DOUBLED actually. And my super handy sewing room is now Ethan's room. And my craft blog is now deserted and retired. BUT Emersyn has not forgotten. SOOOOO today I woke up to sunshine and blue skies....the stars all aligned...and I decided to skip library day and take a AT HOME DAY. All of those things combined with a few spare seconds and BOTH of the kids playing nicely together equalled A SEWING DAY!!! I am not going to lie....I HAVE MISSED SEWING. I love taking somthing totally un-fun and making it into something NEW and exciting. LOVE IT!!! And besides all of that....who can resist that cute little face???? She is so sweet and patient that she just asks and asks and NEVER gets mad at me or upset when she doesn't get her way. She is such a lovely person....I hope to be like her when I grow up.
Anyway...I ordered this tank top from Forever21 online this fall and it was too big. I had only paid like $3.00 for it, so I decided to keep it and take it in a bit. No problem for an expert like me right??? (that was sarcasm fyi). Anyway...I got a little serger happy and fed part of the bottom of the shirt into the serger with the side seam...needless to say after I fixed my mistakes, the shirt would NOT fit on me. So I had essentially taken a cute too big shirt and turned it into a slighly lopsided hot mess. So I threw it into the fabric stash pile and called it a day....until today. I had visions of a cute skirt for Em, but she wanted a dress. I was a bit perplexed how to turn a non re-propriate (Emersyn's word) shirt into a 5 year old appropriate dress...can you believe my baby is almost 5??? So I took one of her too small shirts and jimmy-rigged it into a shirt dress of sorts. Then she tried it on and we realized the bottom was COMPLETELY transparent....so I dug around and found some fabric that I inherited from Grandma June's stash and whipped up a lining. I love using some of grandma's fabric...I think she would be happy that it is seeing the light of day on her cute little grand daughter!!!
I think the striped lining is kind of funky and unexpected...just how I like it. PLUS it is knit, so it turns a dressy dress into a fun 5 year old play dress....LOVE THAT!!!
It was not even close to what I had invisioned, but I like it. It has a 20's vibe to it....maybe I have watched a bit too much Downton Abbey this week!!!
WAIT...what am I saying...there is no such thing as TOO MUCH Downton!!!
SOOO I guess I had Mary Crawley on the brain...because the dropped waist and flowy top is JUST up her super stylish alley. AND it was RIGHT up Emersyn's alley too. She put it on the SECOND I got done and refused to take it off again. So I guess that was a pretty successful morning!!!
ANDDDD if you know Emersyn, you know the first thing she wanted was a photo shoot. The other day I walked into her room and she was posing in front of her mirror. I asked what she was doing and she said she was trying out different poses in case someone wanted to take her picture. What a diva!!!
Of course little brother didn't want to be left out of the action. He went in and found himself a green shirt and wanted a little photo shoot of his own.
Of course his attention span is a bit shorter....
I hope I got my sewing mojo back a bit today because I have a feeling THIS cute little face is going to be asking for all sorts of things now that she got herself a new MARCH dress!!!
